The nearest and most important to anglers at Nokomai is the Mataura River, world famous for it's brown trout. This river flows through Nokomai for at least 20 kilometers. The closest part only 2 minutes drive from Nokomai Valley Accommodation. Our guides have exclusive vehicle access. Alternatively there are several options to the main rivers when they are not suitable for fishing.
Fishing excursions from Nokomai are mostly day or half-day trips - a tasty fisherman's picnic lunch can be provided by arrangement. Our fishing guides are very experienced in our local area and are local residents. They are also members of the New Zealand Fishing Guides Association and abide by the ethics of the this Association. Some very unique aspects of the rivers in our area include the clear waters giving excellent sight fishing opportunities for brown and rainbow trout.
Most rivers in Northern Southland have relatively easy access to river banks and they are reasonably easy to walk as the rivers are not set amidst steep terrain.
Fishing equipment. This can be hired from the guide for a nominal fee but most anglers prefer to bring their own. Flies are hand-made for sale locally at Len Prentice's Fly and Tackle shop at Athol www.browntrouttackle.co.nz
Heli-fishing. Nokomai Helicopters can fly you to some of the less accessible fishing spots often set in beautiful remote high country surroundings. This saves time and is often a good alternative when local rivers are not fishable.
